Salford Group

Salford Group knows cover crops. Salford’s Valmar 56 series seeders set the bar for versatility and accuracy in cover crop seeding. These machines accurately handle a wide variety of seed and blends, while pairing with virtually any implement to seed cover crops while performing other field operations. Salford has a variety of tillage implements that are suitable for seeding with the 56 series applicators. Some Salford tillage machines can be used for hay and pasture renovation, and others can be used to work in standing cover crops as green manure. Nebraska Farmer Uses Cover Crops to ‘Flip’ His Soil

Adam Heskett of Culbertson, Neb., uses cover crops to be profitable in years when precipitation is the most limiting factor. In this video and article from AgWeb, Heskett talks about how cover crops catch and hold moisture in his dry environment, lower his input costs and provide other benefits.

Will Cover Crops Work on a Minnesota Farm Near Lake Superior?

Amid a howling wind, Dave Jensch at Rolling Hills Farms in northeastern Minnesota takes us on a tour of his rye cover crop experiment in this YouTube video. He decided to plow a hay field a little early to see if he could get a stand of rye established, and it turns out that it worked pretty well. We’re guessing anyone who says their climate is too cold for covers isn’t as far north as Dave!

Researchers: Using Highboy to Interseed Cover Crops at R5 Results in Better Growth

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln hosted a field day to educate local farmers about a research project testing the effectiveness of interseeding cover crops into corn at R5 using a highboy. The university tested the setup with a straight cereal rye and a three-way mix of cereal rye, rapeseed and turnips. “We know it’s better to establish at R5 than during or after harvest. We get better growth and better biomass in the spring, at least here in eastern Nebraska,” Katja Koehler-Cole tells Market Journal in this video.

Wisconsin Farmer Teaches Neighbors about Cover Crops

A Milwaukee-based news crew visited long-time no-tiller and cover cropper Ross Bishop of Jackson, Wis., to learn about No-Till November. “Farmer Ross” took the cameras on a tour to teach his nearby city and suburban neighbors about the benefits of cover crops and no-till. It’s one of many ways he and the Cedar Creek Farmers watershed group, a 2022 No-Till Innovator award recipient, spread the word about conservation practices. Learn by example from Bishop and Stanley Miller at the 2023 National No-Tillage Conference, where they’ll present on their farmer-led initiatives.

Regenerative Ag: The Future of Farming or ‘Greenwashing’ Fad?

Companies like Pepsi and Cargill are paying farmers to implement regenerative and “climate-smart” agriculture practices like cover crops, but does the corporate support mean regen ag is here to stay? This article from Fast Company explores the food industry’s investment in regenerative agriculture and carbon sequestration.
