Staying Motivated to Keep Planting Cover Crops & Practicing No-Till

A few months ago, Canadian no-tiller Blake Vince gave a presentation at the Pennsylvania No-Till Alliance’s 20th Anniversary Meeting. And while the topic of his presentation was about conserving farm land with cover crops and the importance of bio diversity, there’s an anecdote that Blake told the audience about the future of no-till and cover crops that has stuck with me.

Do We Need to Re-Evaluate Our Motivations for Using Cover Crops?

A recent research paper asks “which should be the goal, soil carbon storage or sustainable conservation agriculture practices?”
Examining motivation for planting cover crops is something we ask farmers in our own annual Cover Crops Operational Benchmark Study. According to our survey, most farmers are not focused on the profitability of cover crops.

Cover Cropped Acres Grew, Record Percentage of Growers Planted Green

Other key findings from the annual Cover Crops Operational Benchmark Study include more drone seeding, reduced spending on seed & glyphosate remaining the No. 1 termination choice
Based on those who shared the number of acres they seeded to cover crops, the total across all survey participants was 267,003 acres, making the average number seeded per farm 694 — a new record from the 504 average we saw in 2023.
