New OpTIS Data from Satellite Imagery Show 2.5x Rise in Corn Belt Cover Crops

A new tranche of data from the Operational Tillage Information System (OpTIS) tracked a 250% climb in cover crop acreage—from 2.8 million acres in 2015 to 7.5 million acres in 2021—led by row crop farmers in the southern portion of the region. The Conservation Technology Information Center (CTIC), which hosts free access to OpTIS data on its ctic.org website, dubbed this week's release "OpTIS 3.0."

Over the next 4 years, DU will work with their partners and private landowners to enroll acres into cover crop contracts with ADM. In return, the landowners will receive a $10/acre incentive payment, each year, for 4 years ($40 per acre total).

Gene Holt, along with older brother Nick and dad, Kurt, operate the 5,000-acre property. Gene’s great grandfather Vic Holsing founded the farm in 1929 before passing the baton to Gene’s grandfather Gene Holsing, and eventually to Kurt in 1980.
