Tips from a Seasoned Cover Cropper
Curious how an experienced cover crop farmer is adapting his strategy in the face of variable weather? Check out this video featuring Rick Gehrke, a Wisconsin farmer who shares his insights on managing cover crops. Despite what looked like a dry spring, a very wet period during planting caused a number of issues and was followed by a dry fall. Undaunted, Rick maintained his cover crop program with only minor adjustments. He's exploring incorporating more brassica species like radish and turnips to help break up his soil in the future, especially if winters continue to have less frost. Rick also plans to experiment with reducing his cover crop seeding rates to potentially lower slug pressure, which was an issue in 2024.
Rookie Farmer Podcast: Making Cover Crops Work
In this episode of The Rookie Farmer Podcast, farmer Alec Smith welcomes agronomist and soil scientist Bill McKibben from Logan Labs for a deep dive into all things soil. They talk about the intricacies of soil testing, why it can be challenging to grow crops depending on the soil type and how to properly go about amending soil. Before the episode ends, Bill also shares a sneak peek into some cutting-edge research on soil amendments.
No-Tilling to Reduce Weed Pressure in Pea & Sunflower Fields
In this video from IPMWORKS, check out two examples of no-till techniques in two plots with different crops (pea and sunflower) to eliminate or reduce a weed, such as vallico.
Cover Crop Termination — Warnings, Benefits & Biomass Insights
Check out a full breakdown of what to expect from a cover crop termination plan, how recommendations are made and what to watch out for before planting your next cash crop. Timing termination right is key to avoiding issues like delayed soil drying and nutrient tie-up. This video shows how cover crops impact weed suppression, nutrient availability and why biomass sampling helps fine-tune fertility recommendations for the next crop.
Cover Crops — from a Cost to a Revenue-Booster
In this YouTube Short, listen to a quick clip from a longer conversation with Alice Henry, co-founder of RegenRate — a company aiming to turn cover cropping from a cost into a revenue-generating practice.
