"Nutrient and Fertilizer Content of Cover Crops"
Cover crops are excellent scavengers of soil nutrients and can help supply major nutrients to future crops in a plant available form. In this presentation, all the major nutrients and micronutrients will be addressed along with different cover crop types for supplying those nutrients.
"My Soil Health Journey: Learning from Past Mistakes, Turning Dirt Into Healthy Soil"
In this presentation, Matt Burkholder shares his experience with no till, cover crops and other best management practices. He also shares soil pictures and Haney soil health test data of two different management practices of fields side by side: rotational tillage vs. aggressive regenerative ag practices.
"Feeding Soil, Nourishing Livestock: The Roles of Cover Crops on a Livestock Farm"
While cover crops are frequently used in row crop farms, they are often overlooked as a means of building soil on a livestock farm. In this presentation, Rob Dowdle discusses what he has learned about regenerating soil while grazing cover crops with cows, and especially with pigs.
"How Cover Crops Impact Soil Moisture During Droughts and Wet Periods"
Agronomist Rob Myers will discuss the many different ways that cover crops impact the moisture content of the soil during both dry and wet periods. This will include a discussion of soil macropores and rainfall infiltration, residue and rooting changes, the role of the soil microbial community, and how organic matter and soil aggregation impact moisture storage.
Professor of Plant Pathology University of Wisconsin
"Intercropping Cover Crops into Corn in the Upper Midwest: Results of 3 Years of On-Farm Trials"
Farmers in the upper Midwest face challenges to diversifying the species of cover crops grown on their farms due to the short window for planting and establishment after corn harvest. Interseeding cover crops shortly after corn planting offers an opportunity to plant the cover crops during the summer, providing greater time for establishment and growth and wider choices of cover crops to plant. This presentation will discuss the results of three years of data collected from farms across Wisconsin that planted diverse cover crop mixtures into corn grown on 30” and 60” rows, including impacts of cover crop biomass production, soil health parameters, and corn yields.
"Utilizing Nutrition and Cultural Practices to Manage the Farm Ecosystem"
Grower
Michael Vittetoe will discuss how his family's Washington, Iowa based operation has utilized cereal rye cover crops to reduce herbicide use in their corn / soybean system.
Andrew McGuire, Irrigated Cropping Systems Agronomist
Washington State University Macauley “Mac” Kincaid, Grower, Jasper, Missouri James Hepp, Grower, Rockwell City, Iowa
"Comparing Cover Crop Mixtures to Monocultures: Research & First-Hand Farmer Experience"
In this 3-person panel-style presentation, Washington State University agronomist Andrew McGuire presents his research comparing the pros and cons of cover crop mixtures vs. monocultures. Following his presentation, Jasper, Mo., grower Macauley Kincaid as well as Rockwell City, Iowa, grower James Hepp will share their first-hand experience with cover crop mixtures and monocultures on their farm operations.
